Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbal medicine is a centuries-old tradition. Herbs provide a form of super-charged nutrition tailored to the needs of the individual patient to achieve their treatment goals. While the use of herbs is optional, many patients find herbal formulas are a valuable part of their treatment plan.
So what do you need to know about Chinese herbs to help you decide whether or not they are something you want to include in your treatment protocol?
Where do we get our herbs?
We procure our Chinese herbs from a trusted vendor that has been in business for over 30 years, and has a long history of working with organic growers. Furthermore, herbs are batch tested for contaminants here in the US.
The cost of herbs can vary tremendously, and may range from $10 - $35 per week. We will always discuss cost with you before prescribing herbs.
What is a formula?
In Chinese medicine we always use herbs in formulas, which are made of anywhere from 4 – 20 different herbs, to achieve a more sophisticated result than using just a single herb. Writing Chinese herbal formulas is an art form that takes years to master. Each formula is individually tailored to the patient to meet their needs.
Formulas are often varied according to the phases of the menstrual cycle. Your formula will change depending on if you are in your menstrual phase, follicular, ovulation, or luteal phase.
Acute vs. constitutional
Sometimes herbs are used to treat more acute conditions, like a cold or bad cough. Herbs can also be used to treat more constitutional issues, such a painful periods, PMS, and infertility.
For constitutional herbal treatment, a period of three months is considered the minimum to start to see the magical shifts that herbs can provide.
